That’s exactly what Doe Deere did when she founded her Lime Crime makeup brand in 2008. The giant cosmetics companies like the Revlons and Cover Girls had dominated the beauty landscape for decades, telling women about the shades and type of makeup they could wear. There were beauty rules to play by and not much in the way of variety.
Doe Deere spoke with GuestofaGuest about the challenges of being an entrepreneur. She always had the spirit; at age 13, she was selling temporary tattoos to her classmates and making it a successful venture.
The Russian-born businesswoman moved to New York City at age 17, and that is when her business skills began developing. She tried her hand at a variety of creative careers, selling clothing on Ebay and joining a band where she met her Lime Crime business partner/husband.
Doe Deere had always had fun with makeup, hair color and fashion. She believes the three make up a person’s image and should be as expressive as one wants to be. For her, strong colors matter in all three areas.
She couldn’t find vibrant makeup in New York City; there wasn’t much of it out there at the time. That’s when Doe Deere had that “lightbulb moment.” She would establish her own makeup brand that offered playful, modern cosmetics. Doe Deere decided to sell her beauty line on e-commerce and in a few well-known brick and mortar outlets. She also made her presence known on social media sites, and her intelligence with computers and the internet only strengthened the brand building she embarked on.
Lime Crime started out of the gate with a bang, and it’s been a steady climb that has already created a cult favorite status. The makeup is unusual and plays on a fantastical concept. The palettes feature gorgeous, highly pigmented shades in colors that go beyond the rainbow. Glitter and iridescence are often present, and the sexy eyeshadows and lipsticks are “up close and personal.”

Doe Deere has become more than just the brand, and she often advises young entrepreneurs to become hands-on with their companies. She creates new makeup, collaborates with the company’s lab chemist, sits in on meetings and shares a great relationship with her employees.
